Lumix FZ5

lumix.jpg

Lumix come in a number of models. I use the FZ-5, which is much smaller in size than the latest model, the FZ-30. The smaller FZ-5 does not do RAW files (the FZ-30 does), but I prefer its compact size and don't usually need the massive file sizes of RAW. I can't fit the Lumix into my pants pocket, but it will sit in my jacket pocket or any small bag I carry. The zoom is both macro and telescopic, an old SRL ability I am so happy to have back. Five meg resolution is plenty. It'll take a 1 gig memory card. The camera lights up fast. Navigation of controls is fine. And to top it off, this little wonder is comparatively cheap with a street price below $350 -- a third of what the Rebel would cost.

50 Ways to Stop Screwing Off.

My Photo

Curt Rosengren at The Occupational Adventure has some great, almost forehead slappingly simple, advice for the achievement challenged writers among us.
If you're going to create a career that makes you feel alive, the responsibility lies with you to make it happen. Nobody else is going to do it for you. And inevitably there will be times along the way when you just don't feel like it and procrastination threatens to get the upper hand.
  • Pay yourself
  • Write to music
  • Unplug the TV
  • Carry a notepad
  • Identify your best hours
  • Light a candle
  • Binge!

Confused? Worry not, all will be explained after the jump.

Lifehack the gift of selfesteem

Ok, it’s Christmas time and coming up on my blog’s one year anniversary so I’d gotten you all video iPods--then I watched The Office and saw what evil can come from ignoring the secret Santa $20 spending limit, so I returned them all. I can’t give you kind readers expensive eletronics but I can give you one kick ass lifehack.

This year I’ve gotten you all an online gift certificate for self-esteem. I am giving you (in no particular order) a list of links that are guarenteed to make you feel superior to everyone around you, albeit at the expense of others.

I Work With Fools
Where disgruntaled workers share their inter-office horror stories. If you don’t feel better after reading the one about the employer who saves money by docking people for being late for meetings, there is no help.

The Eggcorn Database
Nothing makes you feel superior better than pointing out other peoples mistakes, especially when they are in writing. The Eggcorn Database gives you a repository of self-image bolstering snippets. It’s like a Powerbar for the ego-impaired.

Blogslot
The guy who brought you Lapsing into a Comma, and The Elephants of Style, BillWalsh, from time to time, derides writers, and other editors for the tiny errors that slip through the cracks.

Query Letters I Love
Take pleasure in watching as Hollywood insiders (and some wannabe insiders) immolate aspiring screenwriter’s life’s work, and not a few egos in the process.

If you know of any others, leave a comment.

Squidoo moves out of beta

We have quietly — and completely — moved out of the closed beta test... and into a public beta.

That means that anyone can visit Squidoo, find lenses, claim lenses, and build their own. We're thrilled to open our doors to the public, and to let everyone use the platform that you've been helping us test and improve these last few weeks.

Power to the programmers: powerful Windows text editors

I have to snigger smugly to myself when I see Mac users giddily pee-peeing themselves over something as ubiquitous as a text editor--albeit a suped-up programmer’s editor--but I do understand why; there just ain’t that much out there for Mac users.

The most recent example of urine drenched Mac-lemming giddiness comes from WebMonkey via LifeHacker. Heidi Pollock (refrain from meathead jokes please) said: “The day I discovered TextWrangler — the heir apparent to everyone's beloved BBEdit Lite — I swear my eyes welled up with tears of joy.” What we’re talking about is a scriptable, configurable, syntaxt high-lighting, source code debugging, text editor. That might be a short list for Mac but for Windows the list is Ensteinian in its proportions.

You may join me in my derisive laughter. No? Well let me give you a short list of reasons to laugh right along with me.

NoteTab:
NoteTab (one upon a time known as Super NoteTab) is a tabbed text editor with a built-in scripting language that allows users to control the interface.

Another handy gadget included with NoteTab is the clipbook editor. With clipbooks you can store huge swaths of text embedded with replaceable parameters that either prompt for input or wrap around selected text. With the clipbook repository, users can download tools to help develop in languages from AutoLisp to VRML.

Save text directly to your handheld device, convert CSV files to HTML tables, search the web, create a rolodex, email your text, all from within the application.

ConTEXT:
ConTEXT is the TARDIS of text editors--it is bigger on the inside than it look on the outside.

With unlimited file size, an unlimited number of tabs, an unlimited number of syntax highlighters (download them as plugins, or create your own custom highlighters), multiple human language support, code templates, file explorer, file compare, support for multiple file formats (DOS, Unix, and Mac), and more. You can see why I call it the TARDIS of text editors.

A couple really standout items are the macro recorder, and the command line handler. You could almost replace the standard Windows shell with ConTEXT…I might just give that a try.

Chrimson Editor:
It’s so small it fits on a floppy, which means that I keep a copy of it on my portable USB device. It has a macro recorder, spell checker, multi-level undo, support for a multitude of syntax highlighters (in addition to the ability to create your own), built-in FTP client, file browser, find and replace across multiple documents, and much more.

And that’s not all folks, those are just the text editors I use or have used. You can Google for any combination of features and turn up a number of text editors. For instance I searched for free scriptable programmer editor and turned up the following links: Windows-only editors, SciTE ports, Free Windows editors. But don’t pee your pants when you find the perfect editor for you.

Convert Protected Audio Into a Plain MP3

wikiHow by eHow
If you've ever bought music on iTunes, walmart.com, or another legal music-downloading system, it'll be protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM). Protected from you, the consumer. For example, you can probably only play your songs in the program you used to buy them. What if you want to transfer it to an unsupported MP3 player or transfer it to another of your computers? These are legal activities (provided you do not distribute the results to others, which is a violation of copyright), but the music companies want you to listen to music on their terms. Here's how to break the locks off your tunes.

Practicing Unsafe Web
lockerlink.gif

Then I loaded the copy of AVG that I had ready for the occasion. One scan and there were 38 trojans in the bag, 34 of which the program "healed" and four of which I had to dig out manually. Another scan with AVG gave me several more. The total after three scans was 57 - all contracted during the two minutes I was online with Microsoft's firewall up and running, and that's not counting what the Microsoft anti-malware scanner caught at the door.

Yikes! Could it be any easier?
Holy crap! I go and invest a butt load of time beta testing Sauce Reader, then switch to BlogNavigator, then give up on both and switch back to the built in editor. Then one day, because I am a huge sucker for Google Ads, I click on a link to Qumana.

This is the very ad

Massive Shark Caught Off Vineyard

It wasn't too little, but it was too late.

Fishermen who hauled in a massive 1,100 pound tiger shark off Massachusetts this past weekend failed to capture first place in the monster shark derby on Martha's Vineyard.

The reason: The boat was six minutes too late in returning to Oak Bluffs harbor with its catch.

The toothy tiger shark may not have won the competition, but it did win the admiration of other fishermen. Steven James of the Boston Big Game Fishing Club said this truly was a monster shark, and one that "could eat you."

LOS ANGELES -- James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

Testing a new blog client.

Just testing the Zoundry blog client. Seems ok so far, though the Zoundry ID thing sounds a little weird, and the WYSIWYG is nice an smooth. So far, just for posting mind you, Zoundry has both Sauce Reader and Blog Navigator beat.

Seems Zoundry offers two versions: the pro version contains a product placement engine and works with the Zoundry ID to help pay for your blog, the lite version has no product placement engine, but limits you to one blog.
